What is Bodhizazen?

Many people wonder what is Bodhi, the Buddhist term for Bodhi mind. This practice involves sitting in a Zen temple or a Zen center for extended periods. Depending on the school or the monastery, the period of zazen may be as short as one minute or as long as a few hours. However, whatever the duration, you must be able to practice zazen without distractions.

Bodhidharma enlightened the minds of the Buddha and his followers by meditating in a cave. It is the most powerful form of meditation because the mind is unified and pure, free of all attachments. It embraces the billion worlds in a single thought. The practice is said to be so effective that not one delusion can come to mind. The Bodhidharma’s teachings claim that the shikantaza functions as a natural expression of the self. Practicing the shikantaza in a zen environment is highly recommended, since the shikantaza is open source.

Bodhidharma enlightens the mind in a single thought, but ordinary minds are not endowed with this ability. They have no experience of the teaching that no delusion can arise. If they cannot achieve this state, they are not yet ready to practice zazen. But the Bodhidharma has enlightened mind, which is the highest level of enlightenment. So if the ordinary mind doesn’t have this ability, then they are not ready to practice the Way.

While the Bodhidharma’s teachings are open to everyone, the practice of zazen demands that you follow the daily schedule. Even if you are a novice, you must be disciplined to practice the Daily Schedule, as this will be a part of your practice. The Bodhi zendo community expects you to observe the Bodhidharma’s shikantaza.

When you do zazen, you’ll find that you are not in a place to practice zazen. Instead, you will be in a state of constant meditation. While it is not possible to practice zazen in one sitting, you will experience it in another way. During your zazen meditation, you’ll learn how to connect with your mind through your breath. The Zendo is a place where your body can be in balance with your thoughts and emotions.

Bodhidharma’s teachings include Bodhi-mind. This state of mind is free from all kinds of concerns, including profit and fame. It can enter into the realm of the Buddha with one thought and no delusion whatsoever. Those who don’t understand this state of mind are not practicing the Way of Bodhi. That is why they’re far from it. If they can’t grasp the Bodhi-mind, they can’t practice the practice.

The enlightened teachers of our ancestors have used secular means to reach enlightenment. They are not attached to profit, fame, or the ordinary world. While the appearance of one billion worlds and non-arising mind are fine, there is no need to focus on the self. This is the simplest way to practice the Way. It’s not a difficult task at all. And it’s a great practice that will bring you closer to enlightenment.
